We have known for quite a while now that a physically active lifestyle makes us healthier and happier. Sport increases our physical and mental fitness and serves as an outlet for daily stress. It strengthens our cardiovascular system, builds muscle and burns fat – all that is good for the entire locomotor system. Social progress and modern technology continue to make our lives more comfortable – but their effects are not always positive. This high level of comfort in our daily life has made one thing too scarce for many of us – physical activity.

Even though physical activity is intrinsic to our nature. Every living being is biologically designed and meant to move. If we do not value this design, the risks to our health only increase. Anybody who plays sport and exercises regularly stays healthy, flexible and able-bodied right up to advanced age.

Staying motivated for sport and more physical activity

  • Do things that involve physical exercise with friends. For example, go to the gym together, play badminton or go swimming or dancing.
  • Set aside fixed times in your schedule for sport.
  • Join a sports club: Whether it is cycling or running – if you are in a group with trained and licensed supervisors you will find it easier to get started and avoid mistakes. Information is available at your local sports clubs or at the Landessportbund (State Sports Federation).
  • Testing Fitness Studios: For many, training in a fitness studio is a cost-effective and well supervised way to engage in more sport. It is easier to stay motivated in a group class. Many fitness studios now offer a wide variety of classes (from traditional endurance building to yoga and dancing). It is best to go with a partner and keep each other motivated.
  • Many sports clubs offer health sport classes, which are supported by health insurance.
     

Small things make a big difference

General fitness can be integrated quite well into our daily routine. All we have to do is alter our habits and change our behaviour. Here are a few tips:

  • Build small exercise routines into daily activities. For example, when brushing your teeth do some calf raises or half-squats. It is all about habit!

 

  • When the weather is good, instead of doing the 'sitting-on-the-sofa' exercise, take a walk or simply dance to your favourite music. For example, you can use extra weights to make it more intense!
  • Walk or cycle to run small errands.
     

  • With the family - walk with the kids to the playground or go shopping.In winter, go ice skating or plan a weekend bicycle trip.
  • Park your car a little away from your destination and walk.
  • Take the stairs instead of the lift.
  • At work: when speaking on the phone, stand up. Walk over to colleagues to speak with them instead of picking up the phone.
  • Track your movements using a fitness tracker.
  • Do some stretching exercises every day. These are not particularly strenuous and contribute a lot to our fitness and flexibility.
